Ellinikon, located in Greece, continues to captivate the public as one of Europe's most extensive urban regeneration initiatives, according to Gradnja.rs. The project, valued at €8 billion, is spearheaded by Lamda Development, a prominent Greek real estate firm. It aims to revitalise the former Athens International Airport site, which operated from 1938 to 2001 and later served as the venue for the 2004 Summer Olympics Sailing Center.
Ellinikon's design incorporates the "15-minute city" concept, emphasising accessibility and sustainability. The new development will feature residential and office spaces, shopping centres, cultural venues, and recreational areas, all centered around a vast park spanning two million square meters.
Renowned architectural firms like Foster + Partners, Kengo Kuma and Associates, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Aedas, SAOTA, Oppenheim Architecture, and Sasaki, along with Greek studios such as 314 Architecture Studio and Bobotis+Bobotis Architects, are all collaborating on this project.
Ellinikon Experience Park: The initial phase, completed in just six months, includes a 75,000-square-meter park with three historic hangars from the former airport. The park boasts over 900 trees and 80,000 regional plants and will expand to become Europe's largest coastal park, featuring 31,000 trees and over one million Mediterranean plants.
AMEA Facility: Set to open this year, this 11,500-square-meter space will cater to four disability associations, providing accessible and interconnected buildings.
Riviera Tower: A skyscraper designed by Foster + Partners and slated for completion in 2026
Retail Development: The project will include the Riviera Galleria, offering premium brands and exclusive dining, and the Ellinikon Mall, Greece's largest shopping centre, designed as a "shopping centre of the future."
Residential and Cultural Integration: The Mala Atina residential area will feature five complexes and a cultural route connecting 14 historical monuments. The development will also include 50 kilometres of pedestrian and bicycle paths and a one-kilometer-long beach.
Ellinikon's comprehensive and innovative approach positions it as a landmark project in urban development, setting new standards for sustainable and integrated city planning in Europe.
