BMW has announced a global recall for nearly all fully electric Mini Cooper SE vehicles due to a defect in the high-voltage battery system. The recall, affecting approximately 150,000 vehicles worldwide, includes around 39,000 cars in Germany. This action is in response to potential safety risks related to the battery’s housing, which could lead to leaks, moisture intrusion, and possible insulation faults, raising concerns about vehicle fires.
The recall will initially involve a software update that includes a new diagnostic function designed to detect and manage battery malfunctions. If the update reveals issues with the battery casing, BMW will proceed with necessary replacements. The company has advised owners to visit a Mini workshop immediately if they encounter warning messages or are notified of this issue.
This recall impacts Mini Cooper SE models produced from November 2018 to January 2024. To date, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the defect.
