Bosnia and Herzegovina Discovers Significant Lithium Deposits

Bosnia and Herzegovina has identified over one million tons of lithium concentrate in the Lopar area, with further exploration underway across 20 additional sites. This discovery positions the country as a potential key player in the global lithium market, vital for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage.

Representatives of an independent organization in Sarajevo have confirmed the discovery of substantial lithium deposits in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically in the Lopar region. These reserves, estimated to exceed one million tons of concentrate, mark a significant find for the country. Lithium, a critical component in electric vehicle batteries, has become increasingly important for the global energy transition.

In addition to the confirmed deposits in Lopar, research is underway at approximately 20 other locations throughout the country. These sites extend along the Drina River and into central Bosnia and Herzegovina, including regions as far as Herzegovina. Experts suggest the total reserves could reach 1.5 million tons of lithium carbonate.

Haris Abaspahić, a representative of the Center for Policies and Management, emphasized the potential scale of the findings. "Lithium has not yet been fully explored. Additional research could reveal even more significant reserves," he said during a public debate on critical raw materials organized by the center and the Green Club in the BiH Parliament.

Lithium is among the most strategically valuable minerals due to its role in producing batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. Bosnia and Herzegovina already has substantial reserves of other strategic resources, including:

  • Coal: 5 billion metric tons
  • Iron Ore: 653 million tons
  • Bauxite: 120 million tons
  • Zinc and Lead: 56 million tons each

The lithium deposits add a new dimension to the country’s mineral wealth, raising hopes for significant economic benefits and strategic importance in the renewable energy sector.

The discovery of lithium in Bosnia and Herzegovina has the potential to transform its economy, but it also comes with challenges. Managing extraction sustainably while protecting the environment will be critical. The Center for Policies and Management has called for careful planning and oversight to ensure the country maximizes benefits while minimizing negative impacts.

As exploration continues across 20 potential sites, Bosnia and Herzegovina may emerge as a vital player in the global lithium supply chain, contributing to the world’s transition toward sustainable energy solutions.
