Croatia is poised to become a trailblazer in autonomous transportation, with plans to introduce Verne, the country's first driverless taxi service, in Zagreb by 2026. Developed by Rimac Group, the electric, two-seater robotaxi aims to transform urban mobility by offering convenient and efficient on-demand rides through a smartphone app.

The unveiling of Verne, named after visionary author Jules Verne, generated significant excitement, although a minor technical glitch during a demonstration highlighted the complexities of implementing cutting-edge technology. Despite this initial setback, the Croatian government is actively adapting legislation to ensure the safe integration of autonomous vehicles into the public transportation network.

Verne, boasting a top speed of 130 km/h and a 14-hour battery life in city driving mode, is designed to be maintained and charged at designated 'Mothership' facilities. The company believes that the two-seater design will cater to the majority of rides, which typically involve one or two passengers.

Rimac Group, renowned for its high-performance electric vehicles, sees Verne as a natural extension of its commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and sustainable transportation. The company is constructing a production facility in Zagreb, with ambitions to expand the service to other cities and potentially international markets.

While the journey towards full autonomy may encounter regulatory and technical hurdles, Croatia's bold endeavour to introduce driverless taxis signifies a crucial step towards a future where transportation is safer, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly. The success of Verne could set a compelling example for other nations seeking to embrace autonomous vehicles as a viable mode of transportation.
