Giga Storage, a Dutch energy firm, has received the green light to construct a groundbreaking battery park in Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium. Set to be the largest in Europe, this lithium-ion battery park boasts a capacity of 600 megawatts and 2,400 megawatt-hours of storage – enough to power 330,000 homes for a day.
This project marks a turning point for Belgium's energy landscape. As the use of solar and wind energy increases, large-scale storage becomes crucial to balance the grid's fluctuating energy supply.
Giga Storage is now seeking funding for this ambitious project with an estimated cost of over half a billion euros. "We lack the resources to finance this solely and are actively looking for partners interested in taking a stake or providing loans," explains Joeri Siborgs, Giga Storage Belgium's CEO.
The park's location on a former zinc factory aligns with plans to revitalize the site into a business park. Notably, Giga Storage recently gained support from Belfius bank and PMV, the Flemish investment company, in acquiring the necessary land.
The company's ambitions extend beyond this project. Despite a temporary setback in Kinrooi, they plan to reapply with an improved proposal later this year. Giga Storage envisions a sustainable approach, potentially integrating grazing around the battery containers and actively seeking additional Belgian sites.
