In a significant move towards a greener future for transportation, German energy giant E.on and commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus have announced a groundbreaking partnership to establish a Europe-wide charging network for electric trucks. The project aims to install 400 charging points at 170 locations across Europe, with a substantial focus on Germany, where 125 stations are planned.
The collaboration comes as the European Union intensifies its efforts to combat climate change, setting stringent targets for reducing CO₂ emissions from heavy commercial vehicles. By 2040, these vehicles are mandated to emit at least 90% less carbon dioxide, with an interim goal of 65% reduction by 2035 compared to 2019 levels. The E.on-MAN initiative directly addresses this challenge by providing the necessary infrastructure to support the widespread adoption of electric trucks.
The first charging station is slated to open its doors later this year, with approximately 80 locations expected to be operational by the end of 2025. Strategically positioned at MAN service centres, these charging stations will be primarily located in industrial areas with high truck traffic and along major highways, ensuring convenient access for truck drivers and logistics operators.
Each charging station will be equipped with multiple 400-kilowatt chargers, enabling an average electric truck to replenish its battery for a range of up to 300 kilometres in roughly 45 minutes. This rapid charging capability is crucial for minimising downtime and maximising the efficiency of electric truck fleets. Additionally, the companies have plans to upgrade these locations to "megawatt charging systems" in the future, which would further reduce charging times and enhance the overall user experience.
The E.on-MAN charging network is not only significant for its scale but also for its accessibility. While primarily catering to MAN vehicles, the charging stations will be open to electric trucks from other manufacturers, fostering a more inclusive and collaborative approach to electrifying the trucking industry. In Germany, the partnership will establish the largest nationwide public charging network for heavy commercial vehicles, setting a benchmark for other countries to follow.
