The European Commission has approved €3 billion in state aid for Germany's ambitious Hydrogen Core Network (HCN), a system of hydrogen pipelines aimed at facilitating the transition to green energy. This substantial funding will enable companies involved in the construction and operation of the €20 billion network to secure favourable loans, mitigating initial losses during the ramp-up phase starting in 2025.

The Commission's decision underscores the importance of hydrogen as a key component in achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen produced from renewable sources, is considered a viable carbon-free energy solution for various industries, including steel, chemicals, refining, and more.

Germany's vision for the HCN includes over 9,700 kilometres of hydrogen pipelines, with 60% of the network utilising existing natural gas infrastructure. This extensive network will connect wind farms in the north to industrial hubs in the south, ensuring a reliable supply of green hydrogen for energy-intensive processes.

The approval of this state aid by the European Commission not only reinforces Germany's commitment to a sustainable energy future but also highlights the EU's broader support for hydrogen as a critical pillar in the transition towards a greener economy.
