Danish renewable energy leader European Energy (EE) is accelerating its commitment to Italy with a €500 million investment surge, focused primarily on agrivoltaics. Agrivoltaics, the practice of simultaneously using land for both solar power generation and agriculture, offers a synergistic solution for sustainable energy and food production.
Italy's recent policy initiatives have created a welcoming landscape for agrivoltaics. "A dedicated decree provides over a billion euros in support, along with regulations addressing potential land-use conflicts. Italy is rapidly becoming a key global market," explains Alessandro Migliorini, Country Manager for EE Italia.
Strategic Partnership for Innovation
To capitalise on this momentum, EE Italia has forged a strategic partnership with the University of Tuscia. The collaboration will prioritise crop optimisation and advanced agricultural practices under solar panels. "This partnership will ensure that our projects demonstrate the full benefits of agrivoltaics, supporting authorisations and maximising agricultural yields," states Migliorini.
National Expansion with Agricultural Focus
EE Italia's ambitious investment plan spans four to five years, targeting Italy's agricultural heartlands like Veneto, Piedmont, and Emilia Romagna. The company plans to continually grow its project pipeline, spurred on by the EU's Red 3 directive, which is expected to further promote agrivoltaics.
