Italy is exploring the creation of a new company to focus on the development of small nuclear reactors. Preliminary talks are underway between Italian officials and key industry players, including state-owned Ansaldo Nucleare, energy giant Enel, and UK-based Newcleo, according to a report by Bloomberg News. This initiative comes shortly after Italy's energy minister unveiled plans to draft regulations by early 2025, allowing the use of modern nuclear technologies.
These efforts could signal a significant shift in Italy's energy landscape, potentially reversing its decades-long ban on nuclear power. The country prohibited nuclear energy production following referendums held in 1987 and 2011, which reflected public concern over the risks associated with nuclear fission. However, with advancements in nuclear technology and growing energy demands, Italy is considering nuclear energy as part of its future energy mix.
The legislation to enable the use of new nuclear technologies is expected to be presented to the Italian parliament in 2025. If approved, it would mark a major policy change, allowing the construction of small nuclear reactors, which are considered safer and more efficient than traditional nuclear power plants.
In addition to the ongoing talks with domestic players like Enel and Ansaldo Nucleare, Italian officials are also exploring potential international partnerships. However, no final decision has been made on which partner will be involved in the project.
