Newcleo, led by Italian physicist Stefano Buono, announced on Wednesday that it has finalized two agreements with Slovak nuclear firms to build up to four lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs). The reactors, to be constructed at JAVYS' Bohunice site in western Slovakia, aim to leverage Slovakian spent nuclear fuel as fuel, promoting sustainability and advancing nuclear technology.
Agreements Details
Both agreements aim to create sustainable nuclear fuel supply routes and promote advanced reactor technology development in Slovakia, supported by the French government.
Slovakia, with over 50 years of nuclear experience and existing infrastructure, is viewed as a critical partner for Newcleo. The agreements mark a significant step in advancing modular nuclear reactor technologies and enhancing Slovakia’s nuclear capabilities.
The agreements were signed during a visit to Italy by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Minister of Economy Denisa Saková, signaling strong governmental support for nuclear advancements.
Newcleo’s vision aligns with global efforts to adopt sustainable nuclear technologies, aiming to address waste management and create a closed fuel cycle that reduces environmental impacts while meeting energy needs.
