OpenAI, the parent company of the popular AI model ChatGPT, announced the upcoming opening of a new office in Brussels as part of its continued global expansion. The AI pioneer, known for leading advancements in generative AI, plans to establish branches in multiple cities, including Paris, New York, Seattle, and Singapore, in addition to expanding its existing locations in San Francisco, London, Dublin, and Tokyo.
Brussels was chosen for its strategic importance due to the proximity of European institutions currently drafting regulations on artificial intelligence. With the European Union playing a crucial role in shaping the global AI landscape, OpenAI's decision to establish an office in Brussels highlights its intention to actively participate in discussions and policymaking around AI regulation. By positioning itself near the European Commission, OpenAI aims to be a key player in these ongoing debates.
"Having a presence in Brussels allows us to engage directly with policymakers and contribute to the conversation on how AI should be regulated," a company spokesperson said.
In addition to Brussels, OpenAI is also setting up shop in Paris. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasized the importance of the French AI ecosystem, with its proximity to major players like Mistral and Meta Platforms. "With a team on the ground, we can work closely with French companies, institutions, and developers to help them take full advantage of AI," Altman said, underscoring OpenAI's commitment to fostering collaboration in the region.
Singapore will serve as a hub for Southeast Asia, where OpenAI intends to collaborate with AI Singapore, a government-backed research initiative. OpenAI noted that Singapore is one of the most active nations on ChatGPT, reflecting strong interest in AI development across the region.
Though OpenAI has not yet posted vacancies for its Brussels office, it has shared its broader vision for advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI) — a type of AI capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can do. OpenAI’s mission is to build "safe and useful" AGI that benefits humanity as a whole.
The company recently raised $6.6 billion in capital from investors, bringing its valuation to an estimated $157 billion, further cementing its position as a leader in the AI industry. With this fresh capital, OpenAI plans to expand both its research efforts and global operations.
By establishing these new offices, OpenAI aims to continue driving innovation while engaging with key stakeholders across various regions. The move represents a significant step in the company's long-term goal to shape the future of AI on a global scale.
