Nuclearelectrica and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) have commenced work on the first tritium removal facility in Europe, situated at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in Romania. This significant initiative aligns with the European Union's sustainability objectives and represents a major advancement in nuclear technology and environmental protection.

The facility will employ innovative Romanian technology developed by the National Research and Development Institute for Cryogenic and Isotope Technologies – ICSI Rm. Valcea. Upon completion, the Cernavoda Detritiation Facility (CTRF) will be the third largest globally and the first of its kind in Europe.

The CTRF will enable the removal of tritium from the power plant, enhancing environmental protection and aligning with Nuclearelectrica's and Europe's ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals. It also presents Romania with the opportunity to become a European hub for the production and export of tritium, a candidate fuel for future fusion reactors.

Furthermore, the project has the potential to boost Romania's supply chain and establish the country as a centre for the development and export of Romanian technology and expertise, utilising local resources and workforce.

Cosmin Ghiță, CEO of Nuclearelectrica, expressed enthusiasm for implementing innovative Romanian technology in collaboration with KHNP, a leading nuclear expert. He emphasised the project's significance in demonstrating Nuclearelectrica's commitment to safe operations and environmental protection, while solidifying Romania's leading role in the nuclear industry and contributing to national energy security.

Jooho Whang, CEO of KHNP, highlighted the groundbreaking ceremony as a crucial milestone signifying the project's active execution. He expressed confidence in the successful completion of the CTRF and its contribution to environmental protection, safe operation of the Cernavoda NPP, and economic growth for Romania.
