German energy giant RWE AG has announced plans to build two new offshore wind farms in the North Sea, significantly expanding its renewable energy portfolio. These projects, totalling 1.6 gigawatts of capacity, will be constructed despite ongoing supply chain challenges that have stalled similar projects in the UK and the US.

The first wind farm, part of the Nordseecluster, will commence construction in 2025 and be completed by 2026. The second farm will begin construction in 2027 and start operations by 2029. Together, these farms will feature 104 wind turbines, generating 6.5 terawatt hours of green electricity annually. Located about 50 kilometres north of the island of Juist, they will increase RWE's number of offshore wind farms off the German coast to eight.

RWE's CEO, Sven Utermoehlen, emphasised the importance of these projects for decarbonising Germany's industrial sector. The company has ambitious plans to invest €55 billion in green technologies by 2030, with a significant focus on offshore wind. In the first quarter alone, RWE allocated two-thirds of its investments to offshore wind, aiming to triple its capacity to 10 gigawatts by the decade's end. The new wind farms will primarily serve industrial clients, including data centre operators.
