Stellantis has expanded its preventive recall to include Citroen C4, DS4, DS5, and Opel models equipped with potentially faulty Takata airbags. This move follows an earlier "stop drive" recall for Citroen C3 and DS3 models due to safety risks associated with airbag deployment in hot and humid conditions.
The expanded recall affects 29,000 Opel vehicles and an unspecified number of Citroen and DS models. Although no failures have been reported in the newly added models, the company is taking precautionary measures to ensure customer safety.
Takata, once a major airbag supplier, filed for bankruptcy in 2017 following a massive global recall of its products. The faulty airbags have been linked to over 30 deaths and 400 injuries worldwide due to the risk of rupturing and projecting metal debris upon deployment.
Stellantis is cooperating with authorities investigating accidents potentially linked to the airbags and has allocated 951 million euros to finance the extended recall campaign across various regions.
