Switzerland has taken a significant step towards addressing the long-standing challenge of nuclear waste management by endorsing a groundbreaking technology known as nuclear transmutation. Nagra, the Swiss national agency responsible for nuclear waste, has concluded that this innovative approach, proposed by Geneva-based start-up Transmutex, could reduce the volume of highly radioactive waste by an impressive 80 percent.

Nuclear transmutation involves converting one element into another, and Transmutex's method utilises a particle accelerator coupled with a reactor to transform thorium into a uranium isotope that fissions to release energy. Notably, this process avoids the production of plutonium and other highly radioactive waste.

The technology has garnered significant attention due to its potential to revolutionise nuclear waste disposal, which has been a persistent concern for the nuclear industry. Currently, there is no operational long-term storage site for highly radioactive waste, despite the growing global reliance on nuclear energy.

While the cost of implementing this technology remains uncertain, the study conducted by Nagra and Transmutex indicates that it could significantly reduce the volume and longevity of radioactive waste. This development has sparked interest from other countries, with Transmutex reportedly in discussions with at least three nations about potential deals.

Switzerland's endorsement of nuclear transmutation represents a major milestone in the quest for sustainable and safe nuclear energy. If successful, this technology could reshape the landscape of nuclear waste management and contribute to a cleaner and safer energy future.
