Ukraine Energy Firm DTEK Plans $470mn Wind Farm Expansion

Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, announced plans to invest €450 million ($468.59 million) to expand its Tyligulska Wind Power Plant near the Black Sea coast. This expansion will increase the wind farm’s capacity from 114 MW to 500 MW, making it the largest private investment in Ukraine's energy sector since Russia’s 2022 invasion.

DTEK, Ukraine’s leading private energy firm, unveiled an ambitious €450 million ($468.59 million) plan to expand its Tyligulska Wind Power Plant in the Mykolaiv region, aiming to boost its capacity to 500 MW. This represents the largest private sector investment in Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 and the biggest private investment in Ukraine's energy sector to date.

The expansion will require the purchase of 64 wind turbines from Danish manufacturer Vestas, with financing secured through a combination of loans and company funds. DTEK confirmed that €370 million of the investment would come from bank loans backed by Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund (EIFO), while the remaining amount would be covered by DTEK.

Upon completion, the expanded Tyligulska wind farm will produce 1.7 TWh of electricity annually, enough to power 900,000 Ukrainian households. This will significantly contribute to Ukraine's renewable energy capacity, as the country seeks to rebuild its energy infrastructure damaged by years of conflict.

DTEK said the project is expected to be completed by late 2026 and emphasized its importance for Ukraine’s energy independence and transition to renewable sources amid the ongoing war.

DTEK has faced substantial challenges since the beginning of Russia's invasion. The company revealed that 90% of its thermal generation capacity had been destroyed or disabled due to targeted bombardments of its facilities. Despite these setbacks, DTEK successfully launched the Tyligulska Wind Power Plant in May 2023 with an initial capacity of 114 MW.

Rinat Akhmetov, Ukraine's richest man and owner of DTEK, has committed to revitalizing the country's energy sector. The focus on renewable energy highlights a shift from thermal power generation, which has been severely impacted by the war.
