Both companies have been awarded over €2 million each to develop cutting-edge tidal energy projects in the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique intertidal ecosystem.
Equinox, a frontrunner in marine energy solutions, will utilise the funding to develop a pre-commercial turbine prototype by 2025. The turbine design aims to harness the kinetic energy of tidal currents to generate electricity efficiently and reliably. The company's CEO, Pieter de Haas, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This is a significant step towards making the marine energy sector a commercial reality."
Meanwhile, Seaqurrent is set to deploy a revolutionary "Tidalkite" near the southwest tip of Ameland, an island in the Wadden Sea. This innovative device resembles a kite and rotates in a figure-eight pattern on a cable connected to a generator on the seabed. Its multi-wing design allows it to capture more energy than traditional tidal technologies, making it suitable for various locations globally. Seaqurrent's approach offers a promising solution for harnessing the untapped potential of tidal energy and contributing to the Netherlands' ambitious renewable energy targets.
The projects undertaken by Equinox and Seaqurrent align with the European Union's strategic vision for a sustainable energy future. The EU has set an ambitious target of establishing ocean energy farms capable of producing 100 megawatts by 2027, with a long-term goal of reaching 40 gigawatts by 2050. This would account for approximately 10% of Europe's power demands, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
European companies, including Equinox and Seaqurrent, are currently responsible for 70% of the world's ocean energy capacity, underscoring the continent's leadership in this emerging field. The Wadden Sea, with its strong tidal currents, presents an ideal location for harnessing the power of tides.
