The Welsh government has announced a significant £206 million funding package for Cardiff Airport, aiming to double passenger numbers, expand services, and enhance its role as a key economic driver for the region.

Economy Minister Ken Skates outlined the plan, which includes developing the airport's maintenance, cargo, and sustainable aviation facilities. The airport, under public ownership since 2013, will have commercial freedom to utilise the funds. However, the investment requires approval from the Competition and Markets Authority due to its classification as a subsidy.

This investment follows a £179.6 million commitment since the government's acquisition of the airport. Despite recent losses, the airport is considered a "vital element of Wales’ economic infrastructure," contributing almost £200 million annually to the Welsh economy.

The long-term strategy focuses on attracting aviation businesses and increasing passenger routes, with a target of over two million annual passengers within the next ten years. The development of new routes will prioritise European hub airports, North America, the Middle East, and South Asia.

The announcement has sparked debate, with the Conservative Shadow Transport Minister calling for the airport's sale, while the airport's CEO welcomed the investment, emphasising its potential to create jobs and drive economic growth.
