Qatar Threatens to Halt LNG Supplies to EU Over New Sustainability Rules
Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad al-Kaabi, has warned that the country may suspend liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries to the European Union if member states enforce a new sustainability directive. The directive, aimed at ensuring compliance with human rights and environmental standards, could impose fines of up to 5% of global turnover on companies failing to meet its requirements. Al-Kaabi, who also heads QatarEnergy, said the rules jeopardize Qatar’s revenue, which could force the country to redirect LNG exports to other regions.
