Alstom, the UK's largest train manufacturer, could cease production at its Derby facility as early as Thursday, jeopardising 3,000 jobs. Managing Director Nick Crossfield warns that this move would also significantly impact the national supply chain.
Reason for Potential Closure
Crossfield cites an 18-month gap in orders as the primary reason for the potential plant closure. He expressed concern that without a guaranteed presence in Derby, future UK contracts may utilise components from outside the country, diminishing UK manufacturing capabilities.
Uncertainty and Concern
The potential closure has been a source of ongoing uncertainty for workers. Local leaders like Baggy Shanker, Derby City Council leader, stress the urgent need for government support for UK manufacturing.
Wide-Ranging Impact
The loss of the plant not only affects Alstom workers but could ripple through the national supply chain, potentially impacting an additional 12,000 to 15,000 jobs.
