Attica Group, a leading Greek ferry operator, has partnered with Stena, a major shipping company, and Chinese shipbuilder CMJL Weihai Shipyards to build up to four 240-meter long, environmentally friendly passenger ferries. The initial agreement is for two ships, with an option for two more, and the total value of the deal could exceed €800 million.

These new ships, known as E-Flexers, are a Stena design and will be able to carry 1,500 passengers and 3,320 linear meters of cargo. They are designed for optimal performance and reduced emissions, with features like quadruple fuel capability, energy-efficient equipment, renewable energy production units, and shore power connection capability.

The E-Flexers will initially be deployed on routes between Greece and Italy, freeing up existing ships to upgrade the Piraeus-Crete lines. The subsequent ships, if the option is exercised, will also serve Crete or Adriatic routes.

This ambitious project represents the largest shipbuilding program in Greek coastal shipping history in terms of both value and ship size. It is Attica Group's first major newbuild order since 2008-2009 and is expected to significantly reduce the company's carbon footprint, exceeding its CO2 emission reduction targets for 2030.

The E-Flexers are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and offer upgraded accommodation, dining, and entertainment areas. They are certified as "methanol ready" and "battery ready," meaning they can operate on multiple fuel types and incorporate battery technology in the future.
