BMW has announced a recall affecting over 720,000 vehicles due to a potential fire hazard associated with the electrical connector in the water pump. This recall includes various models, notably the X1, X3, and X5.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the water pumps in the affected vehicles may have insufficient sealing, making them vulnerable to fluid ingress at the electrical plug connector over time. This situation raises the risk of a short circuit, which, in rare instances, could lead to a fire.
To address this issue, BMW will inspect the water pumps and plug connectors, replacing them as necessary. Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to redirect any fluids that might drip onto the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation system's intake air hose.
Owners of the impacted vehicles can expect to receive recall notifications in October. They will be instructed to bring their vehicles to an authorised BMW service centre, where the necessary repairs will be conducted at no charge.
