Deutsche Bahn has confirmed the postponement of the Stuttgart 21 project's opening to December 2026, prioritising a one-year testing phase for all components and ensuring a seamless experience for passengers.
The decision to delay the launch by a year aims to ensure the smooth operation of the new Stuttgart underground station, which was previously slated to open in December 2025. This thorough testing will encompass the rail infrastructure, the digital hub, vehicles, and personnel training, guaranteeing that the station is fully prepared to handle passenger traffic and maintain stable timetables.
While passengers won't be able to fully utilise the station until December 2026, they will have the opportunity to experience the new platforms through test runs starting in 2026. This approach allows for real-world scenarios to be assessed, including passenger boarding and disembarking processes, ensuring the station's functionality before its official opening.
The postponement is expected to cost around 100 million euros, but it is within the project's allocated risk provision, preventing the need for expanding the cost framework. The decision has been met with positive feedback from Baden-Württemberg's Transport Minister, Winfried Hermann, who lauded the focus on a thorough testing phase.
