Eindhoven's city council has given the green light for chip machine maker ASML to build a new campus on a 50-hectare site next to the airport. This decision marks a significant step towards the company's goal of creating 20,000 additional jobs in the region.

ASML, which currently employs around 23,000 people in the Netherlands, aims to expand its workforce by building a dedicated campus in Eindhoven. The company has pledged to contribute financially to the region, offering 2,500 euros per employee per year, potentially doubling in the future.

While the expansion is seen as a major boost for the local economy, concerns have been raised about Eindhoven's ability to accommodate the rapid growth. It is estimated that ASML's expansion could lead to the creation of up to 70,000 additional jobs, including those from suppliers.

A recent survey conducted by Newcom for Omroep Brabant revealed that while nearly half of the residents in the designated area are positive about ASML's plans, a third worry that the region may not be able to handle the expansion. Key concerns include the availability and affordability of housing, as well as the capacity of healthcare services to cater to the growing population.

The municipality and ASML will now draft a contract outlining the procedures and agreements for the project. The acquisition of agricultural land for the expansion is also underway. ASML has yet to make a final decision on the construction, pending further certainty on various aspects.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to start in 2026 or 2027, with the company aiming to welcome employees to the new campus by 2030. The municipality is actively engaging with ASML and the government to address concerns and ensure that the necessary infrastructure and support systems are in place to accommodate the expansion's impact on the region.
