Microsoft is making a bold €2.9 billion investment in Sweden's digital infrastructure, betting big on the country's potential as a leader in the AI era. This significant investment, the largest in Microsoft's history in Sweden, will be spread over two years and focuses on expanding cloud and AI capabilities.
The move comes as demand for cloud services surges, driven by the rise of generative AI applications. Microsoft plans to deploy 20,000 of the most advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) across its three Swedish data centers, supercharging their computing power for AI workloads. The company will leverage Nvidia's high-performance processors and may incorporate chips from AMD and even its own designs in the future.
Beyond infrastructure, Microsoft is committed to nurturing local AI talent. The company aims to train 250,000 Swedes in essential AI skills across various sectors, from education to government. This initiative will not only empower individuals but also boost Sweden's overall competitiveness in the global AI landscape.
Sustainability is a key pillar of Microsoft's investment. The company has already secured nearly 1,000 MW of renewable energy in Sweden, ensuring its data centers run on clean power. This aligns with Sweden's ambitious environmental goals and positions the country as an attractive destination for sustainable data centre operations.
