Ryanair has announced it will reduce its operations at Berlin’s BER Airport by 20% starting next summer, citing the high access costs imposed by the German government and airport management. As a result, the number of aircraft based in Berlin will drop from nine to seven, leading to the cancellation of six routes: Brussels, Chania, Kaunas, Krakow, Luxembourg, and Riga. While the airline has not specified when these changes will take effect, it estimates that around 30 jobs will be lost for each aircraft removed.

The Berlin Brandenburg Airport Authority expressed regret over Ryanair’s decision but acknowledged the airline’s concerns regarding increased tax burdens, particularly the doubling of the state air traffic tax since 2019. Despite these challenges, Ryanair remains the largest carrier at BER, having expanded its operations there just this summer. However, the high operational costs are forcing the airline to scale back, a move that mirrors EasyJet’s reduction of services at BER in 2022 due to similar financial pressures.

Industry experts warn that Germany’s high regulatory costs are hindering the growth of air travel, potentially leading to fewer available routes for passengers. While demand remains strong, the increased costs are stifling supply, raising concerns about the future competitiveness of German airports.
